Materials Specialist

This position determines materials to use and estimates costs of produced and outsourced products on request, including labor, materials, contract expenses and percentage of profit for various customers. In addition, this position works closely with sales, customers, and suppliers in developing new products or supplies to meet the customer’s requirements.

Salary Range: $60,000 – $70,000

Work Schedule:  8am – 5pm

Essential Functions 

  • Aligns application support and material recommendations with target markets and strategic business vision.
  • Determines material(s) that meet customer specifications and requirements. This is done through careful evaluation of customer specifications and understanding how the label is used by the customer.  Recommendations can be either current products or new products from standard or new suppliers.
  • If new material construction or new manufacturing technology is required, utilizes opportunity review assessment with Director of Product Solutions and stage gate product development processes.
  • Defines new lab testing methodologies if outside of standard lab testing protocols to validate material performance against customer application requirements. Assists with Test method SOP creation.
  • Evaluates product feasibility, specifications, constructions, tolerances, and other technical data with production personnel.
  • Ownership for Tier 4 R&D reporting in Operational manufacturing review meetings to report on trials, department KPI’s.
  • Leads post R&D trial manufacturing reviews and coordinates action items.
  • Participates in research and development (R&D) product development meetings and assures that timely completion and documented feedback.
  • Works closely with equipment and material suppliers in developing new products according to customer specifications.
  • Obtains approvals and coordinates activities with UL/CSA.
  • Creates and maintains raw material files.
  • Creates item numbers for R&D jobs.
  • Assigns lab book numbers, creates product folders for new materials and adds final part numbers (TT, CP, etc.) to lab book numbers when created.
  • Participates in local customer visits and conference calls.
  • Requests testing of new materials not already managed by Director of Product Solutions.
  • Generates PO requisitions for UL/CSA approvals and new raw materials.
  • Creates Technical Data Sheets and supplies technical information and feedback on drafts.
  • Works with Quality to address customer complaints.
  • Acts as a backup for adding materials to EFI.
  • Provides documentation for adding new materials to EFI.
  • Other duties as requested by the Director of Product Solutions.

Skills & Abilities

Experience:

Minimum of five to eight years of industry experience with labels in one or multiple areas: product development, applications engineering, adhesives coating, label converting, and/or materials procurement

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field preferred

Computer Skills:

Intermediate Microsoft Office skills required, advanced preferred
